What it means is that it is a not-for-profit business, with a clear purpose to reinvest in the community and here in educational projects of the community. Why? Because education creates opportunities. That is my value, based on my lived experience: as a young girl, my high-flying academic path was not written. Indeed, I lived on an estate with my non-working mum and brother. We survived mostly on benefits and had to rely a few times on a local food bank. It is a cliché really, my mum got pregnant too young and my dad was not ready to be a parent either. Obviously, it got excessively difficult very quickly, he was violent and she was drinking too much, and for me going to school was a way to escape a family world that was not kind. I eventually left home when I was 17 and never looked back since. In the end, after years of juggling various jobs and my studies at the same time, I had the highest academic qualification and had many opportunities to travel, away from the various estates on which I grew up. Education took me away from an environment with no horizons whatsoever. Brighter2gether aims to give educational opportunities to youngsters and adults who do not think they can escape their own world.
